How It Works
The discussion group is a place to share your perspectives, insights, suggestions, announcements, opportunities, rants, files, web links, anything. Join the online forum, review past messages and participate any discussion, i.e., answer a question or respond to a comment. For anything to happen  - YOU have to get involved. Post your ideas, insights or experiences. Shake things up! Be controversial (but not mean). Because this is a new group, we need your help to get things going. And active, inspiring, and helpful community offers everybody a big payoff. So what are you waiting for? Participate!  Read about Suggested Topics  below. Support you fellow artists, and arts professionals. Tell others to join too. To join, simply enter your email address in the box below and click the purple button.

Or, for email-only discussion, send an email to:

Introduce yourself, Welcome New Members
When you join, please introduce yourself, let the community know what you do and help us understand your needs as an artist, organization or patron. And you old-timers; when somebody new joins, send them a brief welcome. Just say Hi!  Remember how good you feel when somebody welcomes you to a new place? Consider responding to a newcomer's introduction. Ask a question. After all a community is not all about you! It's is called relationship building. Networking. Connecting. Communicating...

Ask for Feedback about your art, your Organization or business, your bio, your Website, marketing materials
Everybody's a critic. And there are many professionals in the group. Take advantage of this forum to ask for or provide critical input about anything related to the arts.

On Art or Performance. Yours or even someone else's art. (bet you have an opinion about the art people buy at Target... Talk about it).

You Website: How about getting or giving input about a website and how information flows, ease of navigation, ease of the e-commerce functions. Get peoples thoughts about a past or pending event or show. Was the traffic good? The sales? It can even be a comment about a site 1/2 way around the world.

Create a Ad-Hoc Marketing Collaborative - get solutions to your problems, evaluate tactics, messaging, creative, exchange tips & resources, learn, have fun. >> learn more

Your Marketing Material - Post your draft promotional material or press release before they go out - get free editorial or focus group advice - even though it may not be from your target audience, it's still free!

You'll be amazed at what you learn from others. What makes perfect sense to you - won't work for somebody else... >> learn more

How to create and follow discussion topics :  It's a good idea to use the email SUBJECT line to help people know what's in an email. When you respond, try to stay on topic.

NOTE:  When Replying to a message - Please remove/delete all non-essential text from the original message(s) - including extraneous text, images, headers, ALL footers

If you want to change a topic- make sure you change the SUBJECT line.  For example:

  1. Type in the SUBJECT: Feedback requested on my website - yourdomain.com
  2. In the message, add your full domain name i.e., http://www.yourdomain.com along with a brief statement about what kind of feedback you want, specific things to look at or test - i.e., how fast images download, how easy the portfolio navigation is, thoughts about the written content, etc. Or just let others decide what to comment on.
  3. Input to offer - from the critic: Provide helpful info, give some reason you do or don't like something. Technical stuff is great too. If it's about a website, provide info about your browser & version you use (IE v6), your operating system (MAC, PC, Windows XP, Win 98), links that don't work.  Let others know your background so they can consider your feedback in context.
  4. To follow a topic's "thread" - just look for the reoccurring SUBJECT line listed in the online posts.
  5. A VARIATION: For the submitter - let members know if it's o.k. for them to forward your feedback request to others outside the group for additional feedback. After all, your audience is not typically artists - it's the public, art buyers, gallery owners etc. For the Critic : If someone requests feedback from outside the group - HELP 'EM OUT! Send their email to people that you respect and trust. Ask them to reply directly to you. Then you forward the message back to the group. Outsiders can't email to the Group email address. (but they can join...)

Feedback - on your Resume, Artist's Statements, etc
A
sk for feedback about your resume, artist's statement, or other written material. How? 1) Type in the SUBJECT: Feedback requested on my resume - LAST NAME 2) I recommend that you cut and paste your material in your email, or convert it into a PDF. Word Documents can be attached to your email - but they should be saved as RTF documents - and they may not be accepted by some email systems. They can also contain viruses - so be mindful and only send clean attachments.

Sending & Receiving Group Email
This can be tricky. As a group subscriber or member, all messages you send TO: indianaartscommunity@yahoogroups.com - and your replies to messages FROM members , are RE-distributed to the entire group - AND posted online where they remain archived (unless you ask me to delete it). The same goes for the messages you post online at the YAHOO Group Site.  Emailing the group is like hitting REPLY TO ALL.  So, be mindful about what you want the entire group to read. People will  be interested in, (and often join in) ongoing exchanges about most any topics related to art - so don't be shy. The objective is to share your ideas, insights, tips, questions and answers. You can also take your discussion out of the group, and exchange emails directly with another member.

NOTE:  When Replying to a message - Please remove/delete all non-essential text from the original message(s) - including extraneous text, images, headers, ALL footers

Managing Your Incoming Group Email
Each member can change receipt settings to fit specific needs. This enables you to choose how much email you get - and when you get it. You can choose one of these receipt options

  • Individual emails. You will get each individual email message as it's sent
  • Daily digest. You will get many emails in one message - often at the end of day
  • Special notices. You only get important update emails from me, the group moderator
  • No email. You won't get any email, so you must read messages at the Web site

How to change your Receipt Settings

Option 1) If you're a subscriber with online access and a YAHOO profile - go online to the YAHOO Group and click EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP in the upper right quadrant of your browser window. There you can change your forwarding email address, user name, and select an option.

Option 2) If you only subscribe to group email - Send a email request to me or espresso0000@yahoo.com (Christopher Dick - our wonderful co-moderator) and we'll change your receipt option for you

About your YAHOO Profile
You don't have to disclose your real name and personal info on the profile, but you'll need to create an "alias" name to access online mail delivery options, view & add photo album pictures, create & participate in polls, use the group calendar, and other good stuff. It only takes a few minutes to complete and you'll be glad you did! : )

When you set up your membership, I recommend you go to "marketing preferences" and de-select all options. It will reduce the amount of unsolicited email you get form yahoo. More info at http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/acct/

Keeping Group Email out of Your Junk Email Folder
Make sure you add email to or from indianaartscommunity@yahoogroups.com to your "safe email" list or address book -  so it won't be marked as spam by your email service. If your spam filter blocks the group mail, your email will bounce back to me and you may be automatically removed from the group.

Email Management Tips
Some folks create a email "rule" or set-up a filter with a separate folder for this group email. Then you can read at your leisure, delete the messages you don't want and keep the ones you do.

Member communications are moderated to prevent spam and/or harassing posts.

Members will stay moderated until it is clear that the rules/regs/policies are understood and will be respected. Thank you in advance for your understanding on this matter.
